Q + A

Look great, feel great

Indian and Western attire are welcome at every event—choose something you feel comfortable celebrating in!Note from Jayne: My first trip to India was for a friend’s wedding in 2023, and trying new styles of clothing was one of my favorite parts—the colors, the sparkle, the fabrics! Since then, sharing food, films, dancing, and traditions with Amey, friends, and family has brought me so much joy. If you’d like to try Indian attire too, I’ve shared some tips and resources below. There’s no pressure—join in however feels comfortable for you.

Outfits Q&A

Where can I learn about Indian outfit styles?

If you’re new to Indian clothing, <a href="https://www.theknot.com/content/what-to-wear-indian-wedding" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">this illustrated guide from The Knot</a> is a helpful introduction. For a closer look, explore <a href="https://www.theknot.com/content/what-is-a-lehenga" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">lehenga styles</a>, <a href="https://www.asianweddingmakeup.com/blog/what-to-wear-to-an-indian-wedding-sari-and-lehenga" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">the differences between saris and lehengas</a>, or <a href="https://www.brides.com/guide-to-indian-groom-fashion-traditions-5211397" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Indian menswear</a>.

Where can I shop for Indian clothes in the U.S.?

A few places to browse online:<a href="https://www.houseofindya.com/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Indya</a> — Contemporary Indian styles, including kurta sets, lehengas, and pre-draped saris.<a href="https://www.mirraw.com/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Mirraw</a> — A wide selection of Indian clothing and accessories, with stitching options on selected outfits.<a href="https://www.azafashions.com/en-us" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Aza Fashions</a> — Designer Indian clothing for women and men, with plenty of inspiration for dressier events.<a href="https://www.lashkaraa.com/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Lashkaraa</a> — Embroidered suits, lehengas, and saris in a range of festive colors.<a href="https://www.manyavar.com/en-us/men/kurta-jacket-set" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Manyavar</a> — A helpful starting point for men’s kurtas and coordinated jacket sets.A local Indian boutique is also a great place to find inspiration, try different styles, and get advice on fit—even if you’re still deciding what you’d like to wear. Search for “Indian clothing boutique” or “South Asian clothing” near you.

What if I don’t know how to drape a saree?

We’ll have saree drapers available on site to help you get ready, so no experience needed! If you’ve been wanting to try wearing one, you’ll be in good hands.

What should I keep in mind if I wear Western clothes?

Western attire is welcome! For ceremonies, keep shoulders and knees covered and avoid plunging necklines, large cutouts, or high slits. A shawl works well over a sleeveless dress.

Do I need to follow the color palette?

The colors are suggestions, not requirements—wear something you love that fits the event’s level of dress.
